I'm pretty exhausted, and frankly quite impressed with the ability of my 8 1/2 year old Olivia and her friend Sophia to stay up beyond my usual 1:00 am bedtime last night. No, we have never had a friend sleepover. My little ones have also never been to a friend sleepover. I had countless sleepover opportunities as a child, but it's been a while, you know. Anyhow, Isaac and Grace were shipped off to their Aunt Jill's for the night, with the bonus of being able to play with cousin Izabella and miss school. Yes, it was a school night. It was the only night we could do it, given tomorrow is the last day of school for us (they miss the official last day to head East to be with their dad). So we just did the usual activities - pizza, movies, treats, and indoor gymnastics enhanced by the couches. It went pretty well overall. Movie #1 (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) was paused many times to allow for spurts of laughter. The girls were still quite wired after the movie, but set up their huge layered blanket bed on the carpet. Brushed their teeth. Lay down. But . . . it was way too hot, they weren't tired. It was only 11:00 pm. So, movie #2 was installed (Ella Enchanted). I was certain they would easily be lulled to sleep by the fairy tale, and it seemed as if this was true when I peaked in on them around midnight. However, the second the movie ended, there were bursts of giggling concerning the ending, I guess. And then, a vigorous pillow fight ensued. Keep in mind that Olivia and Sophia played basketball in the winter. Their teams played each for their last game, and it was intense between those two. Olivia was especially agressive. So how could they not be hot, thirsty, and restless after the pillow fight? We added a fan to the scene. Then they moved to Olivia's single bed in her room. Olivia moved to Grace's bed. We moved the fan and opened the window. I pulled out the guitar and attempted some lullabye-like tunes . This put Olivia out, and Sophia was on her way. I snuck out, waited a few moments. And then I sighed. It was past 1:30 am.
Today they had Power Point presentations to present at school, and we had to be on time. Sophia was the first up around 7:45 am. She was also the last one ready, but that's o.k. We darted out with bagels thoughtfully provided by Sophia's mom, and on the way Sophia applied makeup to her face, and Olivia's. 2nd Grade! Who are they trying to impress anyway? I was amazed they weren't zombies when I showed up for the Power Point Presentations.
Olivia and her Aunt Susan had a lengthy discussion about politics the other day. Olivia was clearly upset about her school elections. The girl that won for President of the school had promised silly things like soda in the drinking fountains (I can't believe people actually still use that false promise - I thought it was old when I was in Elementary school). Anyhow, her best friend Sam's sister lost. Olivia and Isaac voted for her. According to Olivia, Sarah (Sam's sister) made realistic promises, such as repairing rough spots on the grassy fields for better and safer playing. I said "Welcome to Politics, Olivia". People are constantly promising things they have no ability to provide, and popularity still plays a big part in big politics. She is giving a lot of thought to the difference between Republicans and Democrats, which was well explained by her Aunt Susan. Meanwhile, she has been collecting pennies for the poor at school.
