Memorial Day

My mom, who always has great ideas, had an especially good one today. She thought we could make a day out of driving to Ogden and Brigham City to leave flowers for the people on her side of the family who made our lives possible - The Glenn, Bott, and Griffiths ancestors. I admit that this was a change of pace for the kids, but for the most part they enjoyed carefully preparing and placing flowers at the graves with their grandma. They also received the assignment from her to put the tipped-over flower pots in the cemetery back in place. They did this diligently, even though a gentle wind followed close behind. They were fascinated with the artistry and size of some of the graves, and each one lamented over the tiny graves of those who died as infants or children. I think, overall, that it was good for them to contemplate life and death for a few moments today. And the weather was absolutely gorgeous. Brigham City is a beautiful little town, quite nicely preserved in some parts. I enjoyed hearing my mom reminisce about being born in Ogden (where she lived until just after Kindergarten, when my grandfather landed a Pharmacist job in Las Vegas). She wondered how she would have been different if she had stayed in Ogden. We both agreed that she was really meant to grow up in Las Vegas, even though there is absolutely nothing wrong with Ogden. We enjoyed visiting 135 South 400 East in Brigham City, the home of my mom's deceased Griffiths grandparents. How nice that little house looks today, with the same beautiful trees my mom remembers in the back yard as a child. I even have a few memories of visiting Brigham City as a child, when my Great Grandparents were still alive. I quite enjoyed our little journey today, and we even got to spend a little time at the new Eccles Dinosaur Park in Ogden on our way home. It's important to remember the dinosaurs, too! We definitely plan on visiting that park again, with Grandpa next time. Grandma is sure that he will enjoy it, as it is tucked away in a serene spot at the mouth of Ogden Canyon by the Ogden river. It was a lovely day.
